Rick King Design: Creativity and Accountability
(reproduced by permission)
Advertising design is creative work, but Rick King will tell you that there is more to successful marketing than creative design.
In addition to design, King interviews clients about their marketing goals, researches their competition, develops advertising strategies, writes copy, negotiates ad rates, supervises print production, and manages placement. He works on a wide range of products and services for a variety of clients.
King’s clients typically want more services than a freelance designer provides and more personalized attention than they get from an ad agency. Most are mid-sized firms that rely on King to inform, guide and carry out their advertising decisions.
In 1986, after a few years of working for local ad agencies, King decided to go out on his own. He drew upon his experience in printing and advertising to create a one-man design studio and to offer a full range of services for all types of marketing materials. “I liked the idea of being involved with clients from beginning to end and I knew that they would benefit from a one-person approach as well” says King.
He continues to invest heavily in new technology, replacing and upgrading both hardware and software on a regular basis. “Innovations let me serve my clients more efficiently and gives me more control over the design and production process.”
His commitments to personal service and technological expertise have paid off. Sales continue to grow at a steady pace. In 1992, he and his wife Melissa built a home with expanded offices and a large production studio in the California central valley.
